Bernd Leno joins from Bayer Leverkusen to compete for the No.1 spot…

Arsenal have announced the signing of Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen on a ‘long-term contract’ and the German will compete for the No.1 jersey.

Unai Emery and Sven Mislintat had identified the goalkeeper position as one that needed strengthening according to previous reports, and they’ve settled on the German international.

Leno has been at Leverkusen since 2011, where he was given the responsibility as No.1 at the age of 19 and has blossomed into an accomplished shot-stopper. In fact, only Manuel Neuer has kept more clean sheets than the Arsenal new boy since the beginning of the 2014/15 season.

About the 26-year-old, Emery said: “We are very pleased that Bernd Leno will be joining us.

“Bernd is a goalkeeper of high quality and experience. We are all excited that Bernd has chosen Arsenal and look forward to start working with him in pre-season.” (via The Guardian)

Petr Cech was given the No.1 jersey last month, which many though indicated that a goalkeeper was no longer a priority and that the former Chelsea man would keep his place.

But it seems Emery was always very keen in strengthening that area and now we have some fierce competition for that spot. However, with Emi Martinez, Cech, Leno, Ospina and Matt Macey all on the club’s books, we need to offload a few in that department.
