Arsenal looking to promote Emi Martinez…

Arsenal are planning to name Emi Martinez as the official No.2 behind Petr Cech next season amid rumours of both David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny heading for the exit, Gunnerblog reports.

After spending two seasons on loan at Roma, Szczesny is now reportedly being targeted by Champions League finalists Juventus as they look for a long-term replacement for Gigi Buffon.

Ospina also looks to be heading out of Arsenal this summer after another season playing second fiddle to Cech, with Fenerbahce being the most frequent link.

However, it’s Gunnerblog’s latest update which is rather interesting given that instead of delving into the transfer market, it seems Wenger will once again seek an internal solution.

Martinez has had a few loan spells during his Arsenal career and has also made a few appearances for the first-team, two of those coming in the Premier League last season.

While his talents are undoubted, the 24-year-old hasn’t had to be relied upon by Arsene Wenger for a significant period of the season, a predicament we may realise if he’s to become Cech’s understudy.

Szczesny is by far the most seasoned goalkeeper at the club behind the former Chelsea man, and flogging him off to Juventus at this stage in his career would feel like a rather silly move.

What’s the point of the loan system if it’s not benefiting the club long-term? We’ve basically allowed a credible asset to spend 24 months at another club while his contract runs down, only for him to poached by one of Europe’s super clubs.

Check out Gunnerblog’s report in the video above and comment below your thoughts on the situation. Is Martinez good enough to become Cech’s understudy?
