That stint in Germany lasted just seven months for both parties, and Ljungberg has since remained close with the club serving as an ambassador.

Mertesacker is currently serving his first season as head of the academy, and he’s certainly delighted at the arrival of a fellow former Gunner.

“It’s great to have Freddie back at the club. He brings great footballing experience and the highest possible levels of enthusiasm, energy and encouragement for our young professionals,” Mertesacker told Arsenal’s official website.

“Everyone knows Freddie loves the club and we look forward to him developing his career with us,” the German added.

As for the man himself, he’s expressed his desire to get started rather swiftly: “I’m delighted to be returning to the club.

“I look forward to working with the talented young players we have at the club. I know many of them well and will work hard to help them continue developing and become the best players and people they can be.”

Freddie can also look forward to leading a side fresh off the back of winning the Premier League 2 league in the first season after being promoted from the second group.
