Robert Pires has a message for Alex Iwobi…

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has backed Alex Iwobi to reclaim his starting spot in the team after a disappointing few months at the back end of last season.

Iwobi started the campaign at the forefront of Arsene Wenger’s plans and held down the left-wing spot in a 4-2-3-1, starring in games such as the wins against Chelsea and the draw at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, after our disastrous form towards the last few months of last season, Wenger took the Nigerian international out of the firing line with the heat on the players at an all-time high.

Wenger switched tacked and shifted to a 3-4-3 system and Iwobi has been a bit-part player ever since, but Pires that’s just part of his learning curve.

“I’ve got a very good feeling for Alex Iwobi,” Pires told reporters at the Star Sixes tournament.

“Of course he’s still young so he still needs to learn, to watch; he’s very clever.

“For me, he was doing well last year, unfortunately, he lost the position because it’s not easy.”

Iwobi can certainly look to claim the positions behind the striker in the new system, especially if Alexis Sanchez departs this summer.
