Arsenal icon Thierry Henry has announced that he’s set to step down as a pundit on Sky with immediate effect as he looks to focus on his burgeoning coaching career.

Henry has spent the past 18 months juggling roles as Belgium’s assistant coach and one of Sky Sport’s prominent pundits, a predicament which has led many to question his dedication to pursuing a career in management.

One of Henry’s main doubters was his footballing father Arsene Wenger, who told the former striker that he couldn’t continue as Arsenal’s U18s coach while remaining at Sky.

Wenger made it clear that it was a conflict of interest, given that Henry would be under the microscope to scrutinise our players – players he’d most likely bump into in the corridors at London Colney during the week.

Henry was also seen as a potential candidate to replace Arsene Wenger last summer, though our record goalscorer clearly lacked the experienced needed to match-up to the likes of Unai Emery.

“Over the last four years I have had some extremely rewarding coaching experiences in football,” the Henry wrote on his various social media platforms.

“These experiences have only made me more determined to fulfil my long-term ambition to become a football manager.

“It is with sadness, therefore, that I have decided that I must leave Sky Sports to enable me to spend more time on the pitch and concentrate on my journey to achieving that goal.”

Henry stopped short of mentioning his next career path, especially given that he was the only member of Roberto Martinez’s coaching staff at Belgium who didn’t extend his contract on the eve of the World Cup.

It will certainly be interesting to see Henry handed the reigns at a club and see him strut his stuff on the touchline.
