Arsenal starlet Reiss Nelson grabbed a last-minute equaliser minutes into his Hoffenheim debut after joining the Bundesliga side on a season-long loan.

Nelson has been regarded as one of the best products of our academy since Jack Wilshere’s emergence and many found it odd that Unai Emery sanctioned a loan away on the final day of the European transfer window.

A tricky winger, I thought the 18-year-old would play a major role in our team this season given our lack of natural wide players, but he’s decided to seek first-team opportunities for the season.

Before we appointed Emery, Julian Nagelsmann was linked with the position and seemed to be favoured by the head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

It’s interesting now that as the German coach was seeking a direct player, he went for Nelson and seemed to know him and his qualities very well.

“Reiss has similar traits to Serge, which is his pace in one-on-one situations,” Nagelsmann said when a deal for Nelson was mooted last month (via Football London).

Playing for a team that shares our philosophy and is also in the Champions League this season should do Nelson the world of good.
