Arsene Wenger Urges Arsenal Stars To “Make Up” For Anfield Thrashing In August

Arsene Wenger still reeling from that 4-0 drubbing earlier this season…

It was the moment that nearly sent our season into disarray three games in as Jurgen Klopp’s men took us to the cleaners on a sunny Anfield afternoon.

Two days before the summer transfer window shut, speculation was rife regarding the future of a number of first-team stars, mainly Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere.

All three, along with Mesut Ozil, had less than 12 months left to run on their deals and we were wondering if the club was really prepared to risk losing all four players on a free next summer.

Alexis, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ozil all started, and you could tell that the team was in no mental state to play a game of that magnitude.

Arsene Wenger was on the brink in terms of the usual stance of protecting his players in public, and the boss would sanction the potential sales of Alexis and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Alexis’ deal to Man City fell through at the 11th hour, though The Ox completed his ideal move to Liverpool days after putting in a shocking display at right wing-back.

Now, with the squad more settled and almost invincible at home, Wenger wants the players to use all the energy they can to avenge that defeat.

“When you have such a long career as I have, you have some defeats unfortunately that hurt you for the rest of your life,” Wenger told reporters ahead of Friday’s clash.

“I believe what is interesting in football is you always have time to make up for it. When you can put things right, do it.

“So let’s focus on what is in front of us and turn up on Friday night with a completely different performance. The motivation is there. This squad has a good mentality and it is about us, to make sure we are on top of our game. We must play with pace and a determined attitude.”
