Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit clashed with former Liverpool man El-Hadji Diouf on French television as the Senegalese went on a tirade against Steven Gerrard.

On the day that the Liverpool icon announced his retirement from football, Diouf attempted to degrade Gerrard’s stature in the game and asked the guests on SFR Sport to name an occasion when the England man performed on a big occasion.

After Petit mentioned the Champions League final in Istanbul, Diouf changed his line of questioning and said Gerrard never performed at a major international tournament.

“They were all admiring Steven Gerrard, everywhere in England, and when I came I showed him he was nothing at all,” Diouf claimed.

Petit couldn’t hold himself any longer and stopped the former Blackburn man in his tracks: “I cannot let you say that about Steven Gerrard, he was an immense player,” our former midfield powerhouse said.
