Ex-Chelsea Defender: Arsenal Are “Not Prepared” For Wenger’s Potential Exit

Marcel Desailly backs compatriot Wenger…

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly believes that we’re not prepared as a club for Arsene Wenger’s potential departure, and warned Arsenal fans that we face a few tough years after his compatriot departs.

Desailly may be slightly biased when speaking on the subject of Wenger’s future given that he’s worked alongside him during the pair’s punditry duties for French television.

However, the World Cup winner claimed that the fear at boardroom level at the Emirates Stadium is that we may not be prepared for such a seismic change.

Desailly, therefore, believes that we may all have to be ready to accept that we’ll face some difficult years after Wenger’s eventual departure from the Gunners hot seat.

“It’s about what the chairman wants,” Desailly told SkySportsNewsHQ.

“They have to say something. Either we keep Arsene, or they have to change it and to know that it will be two or three difficult years afterwards.

“This is the fear that everyone has; if tomorrow Arsene goes without preparing the club – because the club is not prepared yet for Arsene to go.”

While Wenger has been a dominant figure at Arsenal for a number of years, I think many are overplaying the consequences of his inevitable departure.

Yes, Manchester United experienced a difficult period after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, but the two situations are completely different.

Sir Alex left a team that just lifted the title, the only way was down for that side. We’re currently sixth, level on points with Everton in seventh place. It can’t realistically get much worse.

Wenger, at the end of the day, is just a football manager and a new coach would certainly relish drilling his philosophy and tactics into the team.
