Glenn Hoddle Claims Jack Wilshere Should Change Roles If He’s To Get Back Into England Team

Glenn Hoddle as some advice for Jack Wilshere…

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle believes Jack Wilshere must focus on the two deeper midfield positions if he has any hopes of breaking into the England squad ahead of the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate has taken the odd option of excluding a fit Wilshere from his England squads this season and hasn’t offered much hope of the Arsenal man making a return to the fold anytime soon.

After initially claiming that Wilshere needed to break into the Premier League team, despite selecting players who’ve played fewer minutes than the 25-year-old this season, Southgate then doubled down on his statement and stated that Wilshere would need to operate in a deeper role for Arsenal.

Wenger has played Wilshere in the two playmaker positions behind the striker, though a shift a few yards deeper isn’t necessarily something he needs practice for – it’s a position he deems his natural role.

“I think he’s much better – and perhaps he’ll get in the England side easier – if he can play deeper and play one, two, three touch football,” Hoddle said on ITV.

“He’s proved that he can do that, and every now and the surprise people by dropping a shoulder and going through the eye of a needle.”

When fit, England cannot afford to leave a player of Jack Wilshere’s quality out of the squad, unless the current manager is aiming to prove a pathetic point.

Southgate started with a midfield of Eric Dier and Jack Livermore in England’s last friendly against Brazil and refused to even call Wilshere as a replacement for the players who pulled out with various knocks.

Looks like Southgate has made his mind up about Wilshere, no matter what takes place over the next six months.
