Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira is firmly behind Arsene Wenger after the boss extended his contract last month despite mass calls from him to call it a day.

Wenger, who for most of the last season refused to clarify his intentions, felt he was still the right man to take the club forward and thus signed a new two-year extension.

Despite the club stressing that any decision on Wenger’s future would be made mutually, it invariably fell to the boss and Kroenke to agree on an extension.

While Vieira feels Wenger is right for Arsenal at the moment, he warned that the club should prepare for his eventual departure, pointing out the example of Manchester United whereby the transition was handled correctly.

“I don’t think at the moment Arsenal can find a better manager than Arsene, honestly,” Vieira told ESPN FC.

“He has been at the club for so long and I think that is something that you have to prepare. Because when you look at other clubs around, when you look at managers who stayed at the club for years and years… it is not easy at all.

“And I think that it is something that you have to prepare because when you have stayed for 20 years in a club it is not like two years.

“To replace Arsene will be tough, it will be really difficult, and I think that is something that you have to plan.”
