Jamie Carragher Questions Wenger’s Ability To Spot A Good Defender

Jamie Carragher had some harsh questions for Henry about his former boss…

Jamie Carragher questioned whether or not Arsene Wenger knows how to identify a good defender after the former Liverpool man dissected our defeat at Spurs on Monday Night Football.

After touching on the tactical points that swang the game, Carragher unearthed a stat that revealed that we’ve only taken 26 points from our last 26 away games – something he described as an “embarrassment”.

Much of the talk following the January window has been about our new-look attack, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan coming in to replace an array of former stars.

Olivier Giroud is now at Chelsea, Alexis Sanchez at Man United, and Theo Walcott has joined Everton.

However, it’s the defensive side of our game which lacks quality and Carragher wonders why Wenger isn’t as comfortable splashing the cash in that area of the pitch as he is to strengthen the strikeforce.

“26 points from 26 away games is an embarrassment for a team who are supposedly one of the top teams in the country,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I look at Arsene Wenger saying he couldn’t afford Jonny Evans, but he could afford £50m strikers. It’s not about affording – he just doesn’t see it.

“I don’t think he’s ever spent big on a defender. Why didn’t he go for Virgil van Dijk?”

Our wretched away record cannot be excused. We’re averaging a point a game for an extensive period of time which should alert Wenger of an underlying issue.

There remains one issue: It doesn’t look like he knows how to fix this.
