Martin Keown challenges Wenger to show ambition in the market…

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has called on Arsene Wenger to sign a marquee name in order to “excite the group” ahead of the new season.

After a disappointing season in the Premier League and Champions League last campaign, the pressure is on the club to get it right this time round.

Our collapse in the second-half of the campaign cost us our very sacred place in the Champions League with Wenger losing his illustrious record of consistent participation in Europe’s premier club competition.

Despite that, the boss signed on for two more years and fans are waiting to see a shift in policy in the transfer market.

“The next step is to win a Premier League,” Keown told Arsenal’s Facebook page.

“They’ve become a Cup team, seven times the manager has won it, but he wants to be a champion.

“You hope the manager gets it right, gets the right mix, brings a player in that excites the group.”

Keown referenced the arrival of Gilberto Silva in 2002 following on from a double-winning season which made the players up their game, given that he was a bonified World Cup winner.

With the likes of Edu, Ray Parlour and Patrick Vieira already at the club, Wenger was still determined to add quality and make the players compete for their places.

We need a similar approach this summer. Our squad may be heavy in number, but we’re lacking genuine world class players in some key areas.
