Paul Merson not having any of Deeney’s criticism of Arsenal…

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has slammed Troy Deeney’s criticism of the Gunners after Watford defeated us, coming back from a goal behind.

Deeney was introduced in the second-half and certainly made an instant impact, grabbing the equaliser from the spot before having a hand in the winner.

However, it was Deeney’s post-match antics which garnered the headlines after he questioned the team’s character and ability to cope with physical pressure.

The Watford skipper mocked Arsene Wenger’s claims that the penalty decision costs us the game and urged him to focus on our lack of effort in the duels.

However, for Merson, Deeney was in no position to make such statements on national television.

“Everybody’s trying to dismantle Arsenal, they’re trying to rough them up, but don’t come out after and have a go at them, and say they don’t fancy it,” the former Gunners playmaker said on Sky Sports.

“Did you see any Man City players come out and say that when they wiped the floor with [Watford] and it could have been a hundred nil?

“I didn’t see a Man City player come out after the game and go ‘oh my god what happened to Watford, they didn’t show anything – it could have been 20!’

“It’s disrespectful.”

As the anger at the defeat wears off for Arsenal fans, I’m sure many share Merson’s feelings. While the message may have some credence, the messenger and the environment in which it was relayed was certainly not appropriate.
