Paul Merson On Top Four: ‘Arsenal Are A Dangerous Animal When They’ve Nothing To Play For’

Paul Merson backs Arsenal for top four finish…

Paul Merson has given his predictions for the top four race as the season enters its final furlong and the former Arsenal man believes that we’ll sneak into the Champions League late on.

We’re currently six points behind Liverpool with two games in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s men, and it’s the Reds that Merson feels will lose their place in the current top four set-up.

After winning our first league game in almost two months in midweek against West Ham United, our top four aims have been reinvigorated somewhat.

As we prepare to face Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough in our next two Premier League games before the FA Cup final, Merson feels like we turn into a different team when the pressure to win the league is off.

“I’ll go Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City and I’m going to go for Arsenal to chase down Liverpool,” Merson told Jeff Stelling.

“Arsenal are a dangerous animal when they’ve got nothing to play for. When there’s no pressure they can put seven wins together easily.”

While some may view this as a compliment, Merson is clearly having a dig at our inability to challenge for the prizes that matter and that our mentality seems to depend on the pressure of the task at hand.

The top four race does represent a certain degree of intensity, but our players know how to handle it since we’ve achieved it on so many occasions in the past.

Check out Merson’s comments in the video above.
