Rio Ferdinand has called on Manchester United to make a move for Mesut Ozil next summer with the German out of contract in June and free to go where he wants.

Ozil has been locked in contract negotiations with the club for almost 18 months with no end in sight on either end, and Ferdinand would love to see a reunion between the former Real Madrid playmaker and Jose Mourinho.

Ahead of the clash at the Emirates, Ferdinand believes that Mourinho can get the best out of Ozil and have him return to the player he was before joining Arsenal.

However, the six-time Premier League winner highlighted Ozil’s standing as notching up the highest assist in the division since his arrival in 2013.

“He was amazing at Real Madrid. He’s a different player to what I’ve seen here,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s clash.

“His pace – he’s deceptively quick. And if you can get that out of him, his ability…

“He’s a technician and I would take him at Manchester United all day long. A free transfer, no doubts.”

Ozil produced a respectable display against Man United, though he couldn’t break down a stubborn defence, especially when the visitors went down to 10 men.

His form has certainly picked up since his latest return from the sidelines, with performances against Tottenham and Huddersfield catching the eye.

However, the fact remains that he’s set to walk out on us in less than six months, and one would expect an almighty scramble to get Ozil on a Bosman transfer.
