Arsenal legend Robert Pires assured fans that Arsene Wenger is well aware of the importance of having a good campaign next term following a disastrous league season.

Wenger, for the first time in his Arsenal tenure, finished outside the top four and failed to qualify for the Champions League, which further compounds the lack of a title challenge.

While finishing the top four is essentially the bare minimum for a club of our stature, failing to sustain a title challenge has led to fans feeling a sense of apathy towards the club.

The calls for Wenger to depart were unprecedented with hundreds of fans taking to the street to make their feelings known, yet the boss still decided to extend his contract.

“Arsenal need to buy some players and spend a lot of money because the first objective, and we need to focus on this objective, is to lift the Premier League trophy at the end of the season,” Pires told SkySportsNewsHQ.

“I can see that Arsene Wenger is the same guy and the same manager he has been for a long, long time.

“He knows, he knows next season is very important for him and for Arsenal Football Club.”

When you’ve resisted mass protest to stay on, Wenger has taken a massive gamble with his Arsenal legacy should it all go pear-shaped next season.

The boss must prove that he’s learned from his mistakes, starting with getting business done early in the transfer window.
