Romelu Lukaku rates Koscielny as his toughest opponent…

Everton forward Romelu Lukaku named Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny as his toughest opponent during an interview with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher ahead of the Merseyside derby.

Lukaku, the current top scorer in the Premier League, was asked if he’d come up against a defender he couldn’t seem to get the better of, and the Belgian instantly thought of our rock at the back.

Koscielny rarely gets the credit he deserves given that he’s often functionally solely in a disjointed defence, though his importance was certainly highlighted in brutal fashion during those Champions League defeats to Bayern Munich.

“Koscielny I think is really good,” the 23-year-old told Carragher.

“Every time when I played against Arsenal… he’s not the biggest but I think he’s got the brains.

“I’ve been in this league since 2011. Every time when I played against him, my hardest games were against him, because he’s so clever.”

Lukaku is the type of striker Koscielny relishes playing against given that he often likes to beat defenders with skill the rather than the brute strength he’s been blessed with.

Koscielny has traditionally struggled against bullish strikers in the past and was given a hard time in our last league outing by Solomon Rondon.

Check out the video above as Lukaku praises Koscielny, while also crediting Thierry Henry with some of the finishing techniques he’s picked up working with the legend at Belgium.
