Arsene Wenger had a philosophical response to the penalty ‘incident’ against Stoke City

Arsene Wenger gave a philosophical answer when asked about his feelings on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang allowing Alexandre Lacazette to take the second penalty awarded to us despite being on a hat-trick.

Aubemayang had already bagged one from the spot and added another with a half-volley from a corner, and the 29-year-old had the perfect chance to claim his first Gunners hat-trick after we were awarded another spot-kick.

However, with Lacazette introduced as a substitute moments earlier after making his comeback from a six-week lay-off, Aubameyang decided to hand him the ball – the Frenchman converted.

It led to an odd outrage on social media with many questioning the ruthlessness of Aubameyang and drawing serious conclusions from this act, but Wenger sought to raise a different issue.

“That shows well the state of our society,” Wenger said when asked about Aubameyang’s decision.

“When people are generous there is a surprise.

“Even more when footballers are generous. And when it’s strikers even more.

“I know they have a good understanding. I like that, they can only make the team stronger. Lacazette came back from a long injury and I think it’s great.”

One thing Aubameyang can’t be accused of is a lack of ruthlessness, you don’t score 100 goals in just over 100 games without being hungry for goals.
