Ivan Gazidis insists that the players will fight for Arsene Wenger…

Arsenal chief Ivan Gazidis insisted that the Gunners players have vowed to fight for Arsene Wenger until the end of the season in order to ensure he leaves on a high.

As a Europa League semi-final looms which holds massive importance for how we shape-up next season, seeing the boss off with a trophy seems like a fairytale ending.

Wenger, who’s won the FA Cup in three out of the last four seasons, chose not to leave on those occasions and now has one final chance to walk out as a winner.

Failure to do so would really compound this campaign as Wenger’s worst under his Arsenal tutelage, with another season outside the Champions League beckoning.

However, according to Gazidis, the players have every desire to win what would be Wenger’s first European trophy.

“I’ve spoken with Per Mertesacker today, after the meeting,” Gazidis told the press at the Emirates Stadium.

“I wanted Arsene to have that space to speak to the players himself. It’s very, very clear that our players are going to fight for this man and make sure that they send him off in the right way.

“Now I don’t know what that means for results, but I can tell you that the commitment of these players to finish the season strongly is absolutely unquestioned.”

While their effort will certainly be of the required standard, we’ll need more than that if we’re to see off Atletico Madrid. We’ll need to be tactically astute, concentrate for 180 minutes, and to be ruthless in front of goal. Everything we’ve failed to be under Wenger in Europe.
