Arsenal 0-0 Red Star…
Arsene Wenger understood fans’ frustration after a drab goalless draw against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League despite the fact that we secured qualification for the next round.
Wenger fielded a very second-string side for the clash days before our trip to Manchester City though we failed to raise the hopes ahead of that clash.
Despite having an effort cleared off the line and missing a few opportunities, we rode our luck for most of the clash and should’ve been a few down before half-time.
It led to a chorus of boos at full-time and Wenger was sympathetic towards the fans’ apathy after the game, although he wanted to play down the situation as a one-off.
“People supported the team [even though] in the end they didn’t see goals,” Wenger told the press.
“They’re not used to not seeing goals at the Emirates.
“For us, it’s frustrating as well that we don’t score but we understand as well that there are many young players in the team and playing these types of games is part of the learning experience for them.”
The performance we produced in front of a depleted crowd in terms of what we’re used to at the Emirates wasn’t what we needed ahead of a big week.
Our narrow win at the weekend against Swansea City didn’t do much to quench the thirst of fans desperate for some encouraging display, and the pressure is certainly on against Pep’s high-flying warriors.
