Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League last-16 stage in embarrassing fashion as Bayern Munich matched their emphatic win in the first-leg to hand us a 10-2 aggregate defeat.

After launching a second-half onslaught at the Allianz Arena last month to effectively put the tie to bed, we couldn’t prevent the Bundesliga giants pouring salt in our wounds.

Despite taking a first-half lead through Theo Walcott, the visitors came out after the interval and went up a gear.

They were aided by the referee who bizarrely sent Laurent Koscielny off after the Frenchman felled Robert Lewandowski in the penalty area.

The wheels fell off after that, and it seemed – in blatant terms – that the players gave up.

Whatever the opinion is of Bayern Munich, we shouldn’t be as far behind as the scoreline suggests. Not when both clubs are similar in terms of finances.
