Arsene Wenger finally ended his hoodoo against Jose Mourinho after we beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to keep our faint top four hopes alive.

While the game lacked the intensity we’ve become accustomed to between the two sides, Man United had the better of the chances in the first half.

Petr Cech made a few smart saves from Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial to keep the scores level while David De Gea made a stunning stop from Aaron Ramsey at the other end.

The game was entering a lulled period before Granit Xhaka unleashed a 35-yard drive which took a nick off Ander Herrera, causing the ball to loop over De Gea.

That certainly swung the pendulum our way and it wasn’t long before we double our lead as Danny Welbeck powered home a lovely cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Welbeck loves a goal against his former side, his third since they allowed him to join us in 2014.

We were relatively comfortable after that to see out the win and recover from what was a demoralising defeat to Spurs in the derby last week.

In all honesty, though, this game did magnify how far both teams have fallen over the past few years and that our aims should once again be to reclaim top spot in the division.
