Arsenal 3-1 Western Sydney Wanderers…
Arsenal completed the tour of Sydney, Australia with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny.
Arsene Wenger rung the changes for this game, which took place 48 hours after our last encounter against Sydney FC, with many of the latecomers to pre-season getting a game.
Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny didn’t even feature against Sydney on Thursday, given that they arrived for pre-season the day the team flew off to Australia.
Giroud opened the scoring after neat work from Alexandre Lacazette and Nacho Monreal, smashing the ball into the roof of the net after making a trademark run to the near post.
Monreal, arguably our most impressive player on the pitch, picked out a raking ball for our second which sent Ramsey clear and he made no mistake, lobbing the keeper and doubling.
Shortly before half-time, Elneny put the game beyond the hosts after his deflected strike skidded beyond the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
We looked rather leggy after the break with Western Wanderers coming into the game and they were given a lifeline after a confusion between Ramsey and Emi Martinez gave away a free-kick inside the penalty area.
After the initial strike was blocked by the wall on the goalline, Steven Lustica smashed the rebound passed the Argentine shot-stopper.
Wenger then made 10 outfield substitutions at the hour mark, introducing many of the players who started on Thursday and the game slowly petered out as a contest.
