Arsene Wenger baffled by the sudden obsession with top four…
Arsene Wenger stated that he was surprised by the volume of questions he received about the reality of finishing outside the top four after our 2-0 win at home to Sunderland.
Wenger, who had previously reminded many about his record of qualifying for the Champions League at every conceivable opportunity, adopted a bit of reverse psychology on the press.
As we sit a point off Liverpool in fifth, the Frenchman told the press that he spent 20 years convincing them that qualifying for the Champions League was a big deal.
“But anyway, I answered for 20 years the question, ‘the top four is nothing special’, so I don’t know why suddenly it could become such a big problem,” Wenger said after the game.
“I’m quite surprised. I want to absolutely make sure that we are in there but after that let’s get to 75 points and see what happens.”
While he has a point that he’s faced questions solely focused on the top four in recent weeks, it’s only because of how often he deemed qualifying for the competition a success.
Wenger was the first manager to redefine how many measured a successful campaign in the Premier League by infamously placing Champions League qualification as a more important ‘trophy’ than the FA Cup and League Cup.
So, having not won the competition in his managerial career, it’s clear to see why the reporters are angling their questions in order to see if the boss backtracks on the level of importance he places on the top four.
