Arsenal head coach Unai Emery refused to confirm whether or not Mesut Ozil has a future at the club after leaving him out of the squad that crashed out of the Carabao Cup, Arsenal Player reports.

A determined Spurs squad aiming for revenge for the league thrashing we handed to them earlier this month arrived at the Emirates Stadium, and we came out second-best.

Much of the pre-match talk was dominated by Ozil’s lack of presence in the squad and the situation was further enhanced by Emery’s admission that the decision wasn’t forced upon him through injury.

Emery said the decision was ‘tactical, meaning that he didn’t feel the 30-year-old couldn’t contribute anything throughout the 90 minutes.

With the January window weeks away, the Spaniard couldn’t clarify whether or not Ozil will be here in February and if he felt the playmaker was a key player.

“It’s a tactical decision because I thought that the players that were with us today were the best choices for this match,” Emery was quoted as saying.

“My focus now is analysing this match and also Saturday against Burnley is very important. We are going to assess every player, how they are tomorrow in training and for a difficult match against Burnley on Saturday,” Emery said when asked if Ozil could leave in January.

“I am thinking about the match on Saturday, and not thinking about another situation, Emery concluded”

Emery was given a number of chances to assure Ozil of his status in the squad, but it seems the former Paris Saint-Germain coach is in the mood to comfort the Germany international.

The only potential stumbling block to any departure is Ozil’s monstrous wage packet. He extended his contract last year at £350k per week and any club would need to match that salary.
