Arsenal Confirm Alexandre Lacazette’s Shirt Number Ahead Of Debut

By The Editor

Alexandre Lacazette takes ‘cursed’ No.9 shirt…

Arsenal’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette will wear the number nine shirt after his £52million move from Lyon this summer.

That shirt isn’t vacant at the moment, and one wonders what Lucas Perez feels about having his squad number allocated to another player while he’s still at the club.

Arsene Wenger has previously respected the shirt numbers of players who were out on loan, with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Wojciech Szczesny and Calum Chambers keeping their preferred numbers.

While Lucas is likely to leave this summer after a season of personal frustration for him, it still doesn’t reflect well on how the club views his squad status.

It’s also rather surprising that Lacazette has chosen the No.9 jersey given how the Arsenal careers have panned out for the previous occupants of that squad number.

It’s a shirt described as a ‘curse’ by some Arsenal fans since the departure of Nicolas Anelka, with every player who’s worn that number over the past 18 years unable to live up to their reputation.

Davor Suker, Francis Jeffers, Jose Antonio Reyes, Julio Baptista, Eduardo, Park Chu-young, Lucas Podolski and Lucas Perez. It’s hardly the most illustrious of lists.

Hopefully, Lacazette can buck the trend, we’ll certainly need him to.
