Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere have starred regularly in the Europa League…
Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere admitted that they’re fully aware of the competition for places which exists within the squad and they’re hoping to force Arsene Wenger’s hand in the coming weeks.
The England pair have found it difficult to feature from the start in the Premier League, though their displays in cup competitions have hardly done their selection hopes any harm.
After our 6-0 rout against BATE Borisov to round off an impressive Europea League group stage campaign – in which both Walcott and Wilshere found the net – they spoke on their desire to give the boss a headache on a weekly basis.
“There is plenty of competition when you play for Arsenal,” Walcott told BT Sport after the game.
“We are doing our best to give the manager a headache to pick us for the team. We were very professional tonight. We will see in time what’s going to happen.”
Walcott has suffered severely since our switch to a 3-4-3 system, with the 28-year-old unable to hold down a natural position in such a system.
For Wilshere, finding the net for Arsenal for the first time since May 2015 was certainly a relief: “It’s a bit of a relief [that I scored].
“It’s one of those games – it didn’t mean anything because we had topped the group.
“It’s one of those games you need to be in the right mind – we enjoyed it. We’re happy to go into the next round. All we can do when we get our opportunity is give the manager a headache,” Wilshere added.
