Sead Kolasinac and Olivier Giroud, for emergencies only…
Arsenal duo Sead Kolasinac and Olivier Giroud decided to brush up on their goalkeeping skills after training in case of an emergency in between the sticks.
It’s always imperative for a team to have at least one outfield player who’s capable in goal; in the rare case that both shot stoppers named in a matchday squad become unavailable.
It nearly became a reality for us in 2011, when a crisis in the goalkeeping department meant that we had to bring Jens Lehmann out of retirement.
The German icon went straight into the squad to face Blackpool despite being out of action for nearly two years, and we all had our hearts in our mouths when Lehmann came charging out and fouled their striker.
He was the last man, although the ref decided that a yellow card would suffice.
When it was asked what would’ve occurred had Lehmann been sent off, Robin Van Persie claimed he would’ve gone in goal – and he’s a good goalkeeper too.
Should this happen anytime soon, it’s good to see we’ve got two competent outfield players to step in, with Gunners icon Jens Lehmann clearly impressed with their shot-stopping techniques as he watched on.
I for one hope Arsenal release more of these videos. If anything, it will certainly dispel the myth that our players do nothing but pass around in circles all day in training.
