Barcelona have cooled their interest in Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams with reports in the Catalan region believing that the 22-year-old is Arsenal-bound while speculating an agreement has been reached, E-Noticies reports.
Williams is one of those players whose name is constantly linked with a move to north London given that Mikel Arteta’s shortlist very rarely updates.
We’ve seen the Spanish coach go back for players he’s pursued for years in cases like David Raya and Jorginho – and Arsenal’s need for a wide player is still glaring.
Williams was extensively linked with a move to Barcelona and while a move seemed close, the Euro 2024 winner decided to stay with his beloved club and guide them back into European football.
12 months is a long time in football and, according to the report, the Catalan giants have moved on from the Bilbao star and are instead eyeing a move for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao.
It’s rare for a Catalan outlet to be completely impartial when discussing their elite clubs and while Barcelona may no longer be at the table for Williams, it’s likely more to do with their crippling finances.
Williams has a rather feasible release clause in the region of €55 million and, given how often his name has been linked with our club which has prevented us from making other moves, it would be not very pleasant if he were to move elsewhere.
