Arsenal are in talks to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira who is currently away with Uruguay at the World Cup as Unai Emery see his squad take shape, the Daily Mail reports.

Emery has already signed Stephan Lichsteiner on a free transfer while a deal for Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathapolous is believed to be agreed.

Talk of a ‘restricted budget’ has been rife ever since Arsene Wenger announced his departure, and the report claims that we’re seeking the option of paying out Correira’s buyout clause in instalments.

The holding midfielder position is one we’ve all wanted strengthening and while we all anticipated a player with a huge size to be of interest, it seems Emery and Sven Mislintat feel like 5’6” midfielder Torreira is the right option.

Given that he started his career at Pescaria before making a name for himself in Serie A, Torreira has drawn comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Marco Verratti.

Torreira seems like more of a ball-winner than the aforementioned Italian, though given that he started his career as a striker, maybe Emery sees him in a more advanced role.

Either way, it’s rather refreshing seeing the swiftness at which we seem to be doing business under the new regime. Indecisiveness is a huge drawback in the transfer window and it’s certainly something we suffered from under Arsene Wenger.

Where do you see Torreira playing if he arrives?
