Despite announcing plans to make 55 members of staff redundant on Wednesday, it seems our transfer plans remain intact and the club is determined to arm Mikel Arteta with the squad he needs to get us back into the Champions League.
The head coach has made it clear that the squad needs major improvement if we’re to bridge the gap that’s developed between us and the other top teams in the country following our worst Premier League season since 1995.
Central defence is clearly an area we need strengthening having conceded 48 goals in the league last season, and it seems the recruitment team have identified Gabriel as a target.
According to the report, we’ve opened talks with Lille to try and agree a fee for the 22-year-old after reports from France claimed that coming to the Emirates was the defender’s wish.
As a left-footed defender, Arteta has always preferred that quality in a central defender as it benefits our style of playing out from the back.
However, our plethora of options in defence means that Gabriel’s potential arrival, as well as the return of William Saliba, means that we need an exodus in that position.
Rob Holding, Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi would all be in danger of being shown the exit door while Dinos Mavropanos has already joined Stuttgart on a season-long loan.
This summer was always set to be a crucial one, and it seems we’re taking early action with regards to shaping Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
