Bob Wilson reflects on the personal support he’s received from Arsene Wenger…
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson broke down live on the radio after reflecting on the personal support he received from Arsene Wenger after losing his daughter.
Speaking to Radio 5 Live to give his immediate reaction to the news that Wenger will step down as Arsenal boss at the end of the season, Wilson gave us a peep into how the Frenchman is as a man.
Wilson is one of our greatest ever goalkeepers and during the early years under Wenger, he was hired as our goalkeeping coach before retiring.
The ’71 double-winning member has been an avid defender of the boss and after his latest revelation, it’s clear to see that he had a personal bond with Wenger which exceeded the professional realm.
“I’m in shock,” Wilson told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I was there on the day he arrived and was still the goalkeeping coach then.
“He is, without doubt, one of the three greatest men I’ve met in my life.
“I’m not just talking about how he changed the game in this country, but outside as a human being through difficult times when I lost my daughter, Hannah,” Wilson added.
“We used to go to Austria for pre-season and then we’d finish the training session and get on the coach.
“Arsene would say, no Bob, come and sit with me and start talking about Hannah.
“And then he’d start talking about human spirit.”
Wilson couldn’t go on as he reminisced on a painful moment in his life, an anecdote which shows why Arsene Wenger has remained at the club for over two-decades and has had a positive impact on everyone he’s come across.
