Martin Keown says Arsenal need the Europa League to save our season…
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown as labelled this campaign as “awful” and said the club needs to win the Europa League to salvage the season.
Speaking on BT Sport ahead of our 3-0 win away at Ostersund, Keown says this is an unprecedented season for us given how far behind we are in terms of the league leaders.
We are 27 points behind league leaders Manchester City and while we’ve never been in the title race over the past decade, we’re also seven points off the Champions League spots.
It’s a watershed season and if we fail to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition and find ourselves without silverware, it will mean the club may be forced to look at changing things this summer.
For Keown, though, we have no choice but to put all out eggs in the Europa League basket.
“It certainly is (Europa League or bust),” the pundit said on BT Sport.
“It’s a great opportunity, Arsene Wenger never really looks back, he looks ahead.
“They’ve fallen so far behind in the Premier League, we’ve often talked about Arsenal maybe being eight points behind the leaders.
“It’s eight points outside the top four and 27 behind Man City, so it’s an awful season really. But they can rescue it, they’ve got a cup final in 10 days time.”
We’ve got two games against Manchester City coming up in a matter of days which will surely shape our season, with the first clash coming at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final.
