Lee Dixon believes third place is within Arsenal’s reach…

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon urged his former club to aim for Chelsea in third place after moving to within five points of the European champions following Thursday’s dramatic win against Wolves, he said on Amazon Prime.

Chelsea sit in third place in the Premier League but are closer to the chasing pack than they are to title-challengers Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arsenal also have a game in hand on Thomas Tuchel’s men, with the two clubs set to meet at Stamford Bridge at a rescheduled date.

Dixon claimed that while finishing in the top-four is the goal, the focus should be on finishing as high as possible and believes catching the west London side is a realistic target.

“If I’m in that Arsenal dressing room now I’m not looking at Man United I’m looking at Chelsea,” the former Gunners right-back said.

“Win our game in hand and [we’re] two points behind Chelsea – they’ve got more games than us to play in the Champions League – I’m getting my sights at where Arsenal should be or should have been for years. All of a sudden that is the target they should be aiming at.

“Tony Adams would be going around saying in the dressing room, ‘you know what? forget Man United, we’re going for Chelsea,” Dixon added.

Not only are Chelsea within our sights, but they’ve been on a stuttering form of late in the league and needed a last-minute winner to prevent more dropped points at Crystal Palace last week.

Tuchel has proven to be an astute cup manager since his time at Chelsea, but finding consistency in the league has been a struggle.

Arsenal currently sit joint-top in the form table, which suggests the momentum is there to mount a realistic charge at third place.
