Arsenal legend Charlie Nicolas believes that nothing has changed in terms of our performances this season as the Sky Sports reflected on Thursday’s defeat at Rennes, Sky Sports reports.

The Ligue 1 side, who’re currently sitting in 10th place, raced into a 3-1 first-leg lead to take into next week’s crucial clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Despite taking an early lead through Alex Iwobi, disastrous defending saw us hand the initiative to the hosts and eventually capitulate.

Sokratis got himself sent off in a matter of minutes with two daft challenges to completely put us on the back foot, and Nicholas is starting to see the same failings we witnessed under Arsene Wenger.

“Yes [Arsenal are as poor as last season], I say it all the time, yes,” Nicholas said on Gillette Soccer Saturday when asked if we’re as bad as last season.

“Defensively a mess, no leadership, no guidance, even with Cech coming back.

“I can actually see why he’s decided to say ‘do you know what, I’ve had enough’.”

We have seen our familiar frailties reel their ugly heads in recent months and it seems that Emery still has a lot of work to do. Defensively, we can’t seem to keep things tight at the back with a back four and are often susceptible to the counter-attack.

Our next two fixtures will now define our campaign and could go a long way to shaping Emery’s tenure. Only victories will do against Manchester United and Rennes.
