Robert Pires names his favourite goal…

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has named his iconic goal against Aston Villa in 2002 as his favourite goal in red and white as he celebrates the anniversary of his arrival.

Pires was named the PFA Player of the Year that season despite missing months of that campaign with a dislocated knee injury sustained against Newcastle United.

The Frenchman cemented himself as the most free-scoring midfielder in the country that season, forging a deadly partnership with Ashley Cole down the left wing.

His legendary striker at Villa Park will forever be etched into Premier League folklore, especially given that he completely embarrassed two legends in George Boateng and Peter Schmeichel.

“Technically it was perfect,” Pires told Arsenal Player.

“When I was in front of Schmeichel, I said ‘yeah, okay, I can put the ball over him’.

“But he was on the line so I tried, and I scored.”

Pires was not only a great goalscorer but a scorer of great goals. The strikes against Southampton at home and Liverpool away come to mind.

Do you agree with his choice in the video above?
