Arsenal legend Robert Pires revealed that he personally sought out Alex Iwobi following the weekend’s 2-0 victory against Watford to let him know that he was the difference maker, the Gunners legend told The Evening Standard.

Iwobi was brought on with the game heading towards a goalless draw, but it was the 22-year-old’s vicious cross which forced Ryan Cathcart to turn the ball into his own net.

Moments later, Iwobi pounced on a loose ball to start a counter-attack, leading to Alexandre Lacazette’s cut-back for Mesut Ozil to seal the game.

Much-maligned over the past few seasons, Iwobi has been one of the players who’s visibly improved under Unai Emery and Pires made sure he communicated that with the former Arsenal academy star.

“I know just one thing, I told him after the game [against Watford] he made the difference,” Pires was quoted as saying. “He’s a great player, very fast.

“He finds good solutions on the field with his vision. He has good mentality and spirit. Of course, he’s young but he’s learning very quickly.

“Arsenal with Alex Iwobi and Alex Iwobi with Arsenal have a good future.”

We have a shortage of direct players out wide and while Iwobi isn’t blessed with blistering pace, he can certainly take one a few defenders once he gets into his stride.

Hopefully, Iwobi and Emery have started their relationship as they mean to go on.
