Arsenal legend Robert Pires has an interesting choice for our most important signing…

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has named head coach Unai Emery as our signing of the summer despite the arrival of five first-team players during the close season, Sky Sports reports.

After 22 years, we have a new manager at the helm and Emery has certainly run the changes among the playing staff ahead of the new campaign.

Stephan Lichsteiner, Sokratis Papastathoulos, Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have joined the club with a combined fee of circa £70million, with a clear emphasis from Emery to strengthen the defensive third of our team.

Only Manchester City and Liverpool scored more goals than us last season, and it appears that the former Paris Saint-Germain coach wants to tighten the defensive rearguard.

For, Pires though, the signings are irrelevant if Emery doesn’t get it right in terms of his tactics and philosophy.

“The best signing for me is Unai Emery, the manager,” the former French midfielder said.

“Of course I believe in the players, and especially the new players. But for Emery, it’s very important to start very well. He knows he’s at a big club and has a lot of pressure, but I think he has a big character and spirit.

“He won in Spain. He won in France. He has a lot of experience and I hope for him and Arsenal that he is successful with the club.”

One thing Emery promised fans is that he and the squad will work incredibly hard to get this right and given his reputation, those aren’t cliched words.

His time at PSG was seen as a disappointment due to his failure to deliver the Champions League, a rather unfair metric to judge a manager by.

At Arsenal, one gets the sense that Emery feels he has the right set-up to give this a good go.
