Andrea Berta emerges as leading candidate…
Arsenal are reportedly keen to tie up a deal to bring former Atletico Madrid director Andrea Berta to fill the vacant sporting director position, Fabrizio Romano reports.
After a report last week from The Athletic indicating that the club are zeroing in on a handful of targets with a view to making an opponent this month, Romano reveals that Berta is now the prime candidate.
Berta recently left his post at Atletico in December following almost a decade of work as a technical and sporting director, working with Diego Simeone as they kept Los Rojiblancos competitive with Spain’s gigantic duo.
Being immediately available to start his job will certainly be attractive to the club’s hierarchy given the number of issues that need to be addressed.
The squad’s weaknesses were laid bare this season, especially in the forward line which has been neglected by the recruitment department over the past five years.
Elsewhere, we need to continue our selling prowess and may have to make some difficult decisions on a few players should suitable offers arrive.
Also, the likes of Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Gabriel are now entering the dreaded final two years of their contracts and that needs addressing.
If Berta arrives this month, it will be interesting to see the type of players we target this summer and if they differ from the publicised list of long-term targets we’ve been eyeing.
