Per Mertesacker refuses to reach for excuses…
Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker refused to go along with the notion that the uncertainty surrounding Arsene Wenger affected the team and was the cause of our collapse this season.
Arsene Wenger, who’s yet to have his future determined by the board, is days away from the end of his contract and the calls for him to be replaced from the fans has reached un unprecedented level.
Following our humiliating Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in March, a pathetic Premier League collapse which ultimately cost us in our race to finish in the top four.
After our final league game against Everton, Wenger claimed the uncertainty surrounding his future had an impact on the team, yet Mertesacker is having none of that.
“I don’t see any horrendous environment,” the World Cup winner told the press.
“As players, we did not care too much what happens to the manager next season – we are really certain we haven’t been brilliant all season.”
Mertesacker was never going to take advantage of such a simple excuse given his efficient manner and he’s right. The players cannot be deflected of blame despite the lack of clarity at managerial level.
However, it further questions the mental strength – or lack thereof – in the squad, something Wenger chooses every possible moment to remind us of after a win.
Ultimately, the fans have been let down by such a poor season and what we demand now is some repercussions and solutions this summer.
