Saka helped dump his former teammate from the competition…

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka sent his commiserations to former teammate Granit Xhaka after his virtuoso performance helped eliminate Switzerland in the quarter-final clash on Saturday.

Xhaka has been one of the outstanding midfielders at the tournament, picking up from where he left off for Bayer Leverkusen after record-breaking campaign.

The 31-year-old was an elder statesmen in the Arsenal dressing room that Saka grew up in and the England winger sent his well wishes to his former skipper.

Switzerland are an experienced side in these tournaments but have never qualified beyond the quarter-final stage and you get the sense that these Euros were Xhaka’s last chance to change that fate while in his prime.

“Granit has won enough trophies this season!” Saka in his post-match press conference.

“I think he’s an amazing player, an amazing person – the humility he showed after the game to come and shake our hands says it all.

“I’m full of respect and admiration for him and Switzerland – they really gave us a game tonight.”

Xhaka and Saka embraced after the game after sharing some wonderful moments together in north London and will meet once again in August.

Xhaka’s Leverkusen will take part in this summer’s Emirates Cup in August as our former midfielder gets the chance to say goodbye to the Gunners faithful properly.
