Mesut Ozil has taken on the mantle of being Arsenal’s No.10, both figuratively and literally after being handed the number following Jack Wilshere’s exit.

When Ozil joined in 2013, many made instant comparisons between the German and Arsenal icon Dennis Bergkamp given their favoured positions.

Also, both playmakers were our record signings upon their arrival, though the only sentimental difference was the number on the back of their shirts.

Bergkamp commanded the No.10 shirt and made it his own, while Ozil had to settle for No.11 due to Jack Wilshere’s presence as our go-to guy.

However, as Wilshere’s importance diminished and his future became uncertain, Ozil voiced his desire to claim that shirt number if the England international did eventually leave.

“Since Wilshere’s departure last summer, the number is free, but I have yet to get it,” Ozil was quoted as saying in 2017 during Wilshere’s loan at Bournemouth (via Goal).

The German wasn’t aware that Arsene Wenger rarely gifts a player’s shirt away unless they’ve left the club on a permanent basis.

18 months later, Ozil has got his wish.
