Hector Bellerin has been speaking to the Spanish press while he’s been away with the national U21 side ahead of this summer’s European Championships.
As always with the press over in Spain, Bellerin was constantly asked about a move back to his hometown of Barcelona, something he refused to rule out.
Whether Bellerin was trying to be polite to his motherland or is seriously considering a move remains to be seen, though he did little to quell such rumours.
The 22-year-old arrived at the age of 15 from Barcelona in the deal which took Cesc Fabregas to the Camp Now and has since established himself as one of the best right-backs in Europe.
The Catalan side have endured a crisis in that position since the departure of Dani Alves and are desperate to find a replacement this summer after a disappointing season.
However, Bellerin signed a new six-and-a-half-year deal in November, which puts us in a very strong position to rebuff any advances from the La Liga giants.
As well as being asked about a possible return, Bellerin gave a glowing reference for new Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde.
Do you think there will be talks with Barça beginning soon?
“That’s something I’m not aware of. I have a deal with Arsenal, but in football, you never know what can happen.”
What did you think of Athletic under Ernesto Valverde?
“It is difficult to see in England all the matches of the Spanish League because the channels usually give Madrid or Bará, but I have seen Athletic and Valverde is a coach who likes good football.
“He has always played a good role in the teams in which he has been and will be a good coach for Barca.”
