Arsenal starlet Matteo Guendouzi has been one of the pleasant surprises of the season after his £8million move from Lorient last summer, and the 19-year-old revealed that he joined us ahead of Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to Canal Football Club, the young midfielder admitted that the French contingent at Arsenal made them his desired choice, while the appointment of Unai Emery also played a part.

Less than 48 hours after we signed our major summer coup in Lucas Torreira, it was confirmed by the club that Guendouzi had also finalised his move.

His profile indicated that he may be one for the future and not necessarily an immediate addition to the first team, however, a few pre-seasons completely changed those perceptions.

Guendouzi also started our first five league games, and his fearlessness shone against the likes of Man City and Chelsea earlier on.

He has since been used sparingly, though Emery still views him as a tactical clog in the squad with the Spaniard introducing him to change games on a few occasions.

“He was definitely a reason why I went. It was him who really wanted me to come to Arsenal,” Guendouzi said (via GFN).

He is a very good manager, we have done very good results since the beginning of the season with him. He doesn’t come across as feeling under particular pressure, he is just doing what he loves to do.

“It is true that PSG were very interested, like other teams, there were a lot of discussions,” Guendoizi added.

“But for me, the best decision I could make was to join Arsenal. Once they positioned themselves, I didn’t hesitate, I orientated myself in that direction. I think when I was young I watched a lot of Arsenal, but the fact that there are a lot of French guys there played a big role.”
