Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin has heaped the pressure on compatriot Alexandre Lacazette after stating that the Arsenal squad expect him to live up to his reputation as a goalscorer.
Lacazette is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most lethal strikers and his record backs up that title, with the 26-year-old leading the line faultlessly for Lyon over the past few years.
Last season was Lacazette’s most prolific in front of goal, netting 37 in all competitions as he helped Lyon qualify for the Champions League and make it to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Coquelin and Lacazette know each other well from their time together in the development squads for the national team, and the midfield enforcer has heaped the pressure on his new teammate.
“We all saw in the game we played yesterday, he didn’t get many chances but he put one away in a few yards,” Coquelin told fans in a Twitter Q&A.
“Obviously everyone at the club and in the team expects goals from him.”
Given the number of chances we create and the supporting cast Wenger plans to surround Lacazette with, it’s fair to say that the 26-year-old will bag a few goals.
For me, the only question mark surrounding Lacazette is his ability to link play and hold the ball up given the physicality in the Premier League.
