Wenger wants Alex Iwobi to improve…
Arsene Wenger has challenged Alex Iwobi to add more goals and assists to his game if he’s to realise his full potential with the midfielder currently enjoying his third season with the first-team.
Iwobi broke into the team during the 2015/16 season and after a string of FA Cup games, he was thrown into the starting XI for the final weeks of the season.
During that run, the Nigerian international found the net on a few occasions and was also efficient in his passing, racking up a number of assists as each game passed.
It looked like we’d solved our wide-midfielder issue, a position Wenger has been looking to replace since Samir Nasri departed for Manchester City.
The boss’ tendency to play a creative midfielder out wide who’s also capable of adding goals to his game is well documented, and it appeared Iwobi could be that player.
But the 21-year-old has stagnated in terms of his efficiency in the final third, though Wenger feels he can still add that to his game.
“We forget sometimes that Alex is still a very young player and that there’s a lot more to come from him,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
“There must be a lot more to come from him because he has more personality in the game now.
“We expect him to be more efficient in the final third offensively because you feel there are goals in there and assists too. They have to come out.”
With Danny Welbeck now sidelined for a considerable amount of time, Iwobi has less competition for places for the two forward positions behind the main striker in our 3-4-3 system.
It’s certainly time for him to step up!
