Sevilla eyeing move for Albert Sambi Lokonga…

Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga is the subject of serious interest from Sevilla with the La Liga side in talks with the club over a deal this summer, The Evening Standard reports.

Lokonga, who had a successful loan spell at Luton Town last season – albeit one stuttered by injuries – revealed that the club have communicated to him that he wasn’t part of their long-term plans.

Signed in the summer of 2021 from Anderlecht, the Belgian was seen as a development signing who could mould into a top player under Mikel Arteta’s stewardship.

While the 23-year-old has shown glimpses of promise during his first season at the Emirates Stadium, it does seem like the team has outgrown him.

According to El Sevillista, talks are centred around an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy clause – though the mechanism of how that clause is triggered hasn’t been agreed.

Arsenal want a guaranteed obligation to buy at the end of the loan, while the La Liga side only want that clause triggered once certain milestones are met.

Considering how well Lokonga’s loan stint at Kenilworth Road went, it is rather bizarre that he isn’t attracting any domestic interest.

Arsenal are constantly criticised for not using the loan system properly, but this does seem like one that was crafted correctly and should’ve resulted in a huge transfer fee from a Premier League club.

That doesn’t look like it will happen and one wonders if there’s a deeper connection some Premier League have with each other which we’re not prepared to involve ourselves in.
