Arsenal have been linked with more sporting directors…
Arsenal are currently being linked with almost every sporting director across Europe as the process of replacing Edu gets underway, with two new names added to the list.
An initial report earlier this month claimed former Arsenal players Tomas Rosicky and Per Mertesacker were high among the thinking of the Gunners hierarchy for the role.
Rosicky is currently operating as a sporting director at his beloved Sparta Prague, with the Czech giants winning the league in consecutive seasons and finally returning to the Champions League group phase.
While Mertesacker doesn’t have experience in the role, he’s been a wonderful servant to the club as academy manager and assistant coach on an interim basis.
However, since then, reports continue to emerge linking us with external names of significant stature in the game which would match the tone set by Josh Kroenke in his statement announcing Edu’s exit.
“We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition,” the co-chairman said on Arsenal.com.
Sky Sports have reported that PSG honcho Luis Campos is on the list of potential directors Arsenal are targeting with his vast experience across the continent said to be attractive to the club.
Campos was instrumental at Monaco in recent years as he fostered the golden generation of talents that secured the French side the Ligue 1 title in 2017 while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
Monaco went on to sell those talents for huge profits including Fabinho, Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar. Campos did a similar job at Lille before arriving in Paris.
He’s currently amid contract negotiations with the Ligue 1 champions which should lead us to take the report with a pinch of salt.
Foot Mercato has inserted Gregory Lorenzi’s name into the mix and claims he’s being discussed in the corridors at the Emirates Stadium for his work at Brest.
While he’s likely highly-rated, suspect Arsenal are seeking a high-profile replacement for Edu, especially considering that he’d be working alongside a young manager.
