Arsene Wenger snaps when quizzed on Spurs gap…
Arsene Wenger didn’t attempt to sugarcoat Spurs’ emphatic lead over Arsenal in the table which means we’re set to finish below them for the first time under his tenure.
After a pretty emphatic win by our neighbours at the final derby White Hart Lane will host, Wenger accepted that our rivals worked for the points gap which currently exists.
We’re 17-points behind Mauricio Pochettino’s men, a gap which is really damning when you consider how far we were ahead of Spurs during our hay-day.
While Wenger had previously dismissed the threat of being overtaken in recent years, reality has finally struck.
“Look, the points are the points,” Wenger snapped.
“They do not come from heaven, you earn them on the pitch and that’s it.”
That’s Wenger’s unique way of admitting that Spurs have been much better than us this season and that we’ll just have to accept it.
Arsenal as a club always seem intent on guarding against a knee-jerk reaction, that we often underestimate a problem until it smacks us in the face.
The threat of Spurs charging past us has been imminent for a few years now as we somehow snuck in front of them on a few occasions. They closed the gap then, yet we didn’t use our Champions League status and bigger resources to extend that gap once again.
We’ve always wanted to just ‘make do’, and we’re now left with a reality we can’t undo.
